What is Augmented Reality?

The augmented reality technology is usually referred to an enhanced and improved version of reality. The direct or indirect views are augmented live and enhanced version is shown of physical real-world objects and any environments. Usually the augmented version is shown as the superimposed computer made images over a user’s or the viewer’s image of the real world. In this way, it enhances the user’s perception of today’s reality.

The word ‘augment’ is said to be the core or root of the word ‘augmented’. The meaning is ‘to add or to enhance something or to make it better’. The Augmented Reality is also referred to as AR commonly. Usually the enhanced version is created with the better use of these:

Marker Based 

Image Recognition technology is also known as Marker based type of augmented reality in the technological terms. The augmented reality which is marker based technology uses equipment like a camera and also a type of visual marker. This marker is of a kind such as a 2D or QR code. It is used to give an outcome or a result only when the reader senses the marker on it.

Marker based applications have to use a camera or such equipment on the device. It helps differentiating any other object of the real and present day world from the maker. Simple yet differentiated patterns are used as the markers, a major example can be QR code. The reason to keep them unique is that they can be predictable and easily recognized with a limited amount of processing or handling power which is easy to read. Sometimes when in some types of information based content is overlaid on the marker, it becomes necessary to calculate the orientation and the position as well.

Usually GPS, which is the Global Positioning System is one of the most widely used and implemented applications of augmented reality by the users. It is also known as the marker less augmented reality or location based as well as position based augmented reality.

This type of augmented reality technology uses these further technologies to be embedded within the system of device to get the live data that is based on the gadget’s location:

  • Velocity Meter
  • Accelerometer

There are plenty of the reasons behind the introduction of the marker less type of augmented reality. Continuous upward shift of technology has been one of the strong forces behind marker less technology of augmented reality. The wide range and availability of gadgets such as smartphones and the feature of location detection that they are providing is another force behind it. The most common uses of GPS based augmented reality is the mapping of directions, finding the nearby area of interests, and some other location using mobile applications.

Projection Based 

When we talk about using projectors and white surfaces to see the screens at, we are using the projection based type of augmented reality. It works by the projection of the artificial light i.e. the screens or content onto the real world surfaces.

Projection based applications of augmented reality also has another wonderful technology process which is quite hard to comprehend that how it is done. The augmented reality functions allows for human interaction when it sends light over a real world object or surface and then sensing the human touch or human interaction of that projected light.

The detection of the user’s interaction or the touch is done by differentiating between an expected known projection which usually happens and the altered projection which is caused by the user’s interaction. There are a variety of interesting applications for augmented reality which is projection based. One of them utilizes laser plasma technology to project a three-dimensional interactive hologram, commonly known as 3D, inside the mid-air.

Superimposition Based 

Superimposition based type of augmented reality work wonders because it is known for replacing the original view completely. This technology is known for changing the original view of an object either partially or fully with a newly given augmented or animated view of that similar object.

The technology has indeed launched a lot. The widely known object recognition technology plays an immensely vital role in the augmented reality of superimposition based. Without the implementation of object recognition technology, it will become nearly impossible for the augmented reality technology alone to replace the original view of any object with its augmented view because it will not be able to determine what the object is.
